Chapter 17
Tim was about to serve dessert to his last table of the night. He came out of the kitchen with plates balanced up his arm like a circus performer and nearly dropped them when he saw who was sitting at the bar. Nick had arrived and he appeared to be having a friendly little chat with Evelyn Bertelsen!
Then one of Tim’s customers wanted more butter and another guy knocked his water glass into the breadbasket when he reached for the salt. Then the one who’d just drunk five martinis made a grand gesture and let his fork fly out of his hand. He was lucky it didn’t hit anyone. Tim was tempted to pick it up off the floor, hand it back to him and say, “Here, you’ve had worse things in your mouth!”
By the time Tim got over to the bar, Nick was sitting there alone with an innocent smile on his face. “Hey, Snowman, how’s it going?”
Tim ignored the question. “Where’s the old lady?”
“She went to the bathroom, I guess. Why? Who is she? She seemed to know you.” Nick tried to pull Tim closer for a Welcome back into my life because I haven’t seen you all week and I’ve missed you terribly kiss, but Tim wasn’t having it.
“What do you mean she knew me? What did she say?”
“Not much. I figured she must be somebody’s mother, visiting San Francisco for the first time, you know… typical gay son takes his Mom out to show her the Castro. This would be a fairly safe place for that sort of thing.”
“What self-respecting gay guy do you know would let his mother go out in public dressed like that? To Castro Street? With that hair? I mean, really… didn’t you think she looked a little bit… odd?”
“I don’t know… I guess I just thought she was from Minnesota,” Nick teased.
“Smart ass!” Tim smacked him on the arm. “She is from Minnesota.”
“How do you know?”
“Nevermind. What were you two talking about?”
“Let’s see… I asked if this bar stool was taken and she said no. I asked if I could buy her a drink and she said no. She asked what I was doing here and I told her I was waiting for you to get off work. And then she said ‘good’ and something about how she was glad I was here to look out for you. She was really sweet about it… seemed like she thought you’d get into trouble without me around and I just laughed.”
“What kind of trouble?”
“Jeez, I don’t know, Snowman. She started to say something more, but then Steve—is that the new bartender’s name? He came over to take my drink order and she disappeared. She probably just went to the bathroom or something.”
“Hey, Steve!” Tim yelled across the bar. “Did you see where that old lady went?”
“What old lady?”
